Competition Rules 2008
1. The organiser of the competition is ANZANG Nature Pty Ltd. The
annual competition is open to anyone except those involved with its
organisation.
2. Entries must be colour prints in all sections except the Black and
White section (Section 7) or the Junior section (Section 10). All
rectangular prints must be 8 inches x 12 inches (200mm x 300mm). If
square prints are entered they must be 8 inches x 8 inches (200mm x
200mm). Panoramic prints must be 12 inches (300mm) in their longest
dimension. Some variance in print size is acceptable but all
prints must be able to fit into a standard A4 envelope. Note: No
concession by the judges will be made for poor quality prints. A gloss
finish to the print paper is recommended. Prints may be created by
conventional light exposure, or with digital control, on photographic
paper or with ink jet or laser computer printers. Prints should be flush
trimmed at all edges (image extends to the edge of the paper) or have a
white border. All prints must be unmounted.
3. If a print is short-listed by the judging panel for a prize or high
commendation the entrant must send to the competition office within four
weeks of issue of notification by the organiser, a CD of the scanned
transparency or negative. If the print was photographed using a digital
camera, a CD containing the file from which the submitted print was
created must be sent. All digitised images should be sent as TIFF files
(specifications regarding digital image resolution and file size will be
sent upon short-list notification). All CDs should be labelled with the
name of the photographer and the title of the image, plus the image
saved as a Microsoft Word document file on the CD. If the requested
image on CD is not received within this four-week period the print will
be withdrawn from the short-list. Whilst the organiser will make
every endeavour to contact the entrant no responsibility will be taken
where notification is not received by the entrant.
4. The following information must be printed or typed in BLOCK LETTERS,
in English, in the top left-hand corner on a label on the back of
each print, using a dark, fine felt-tipped pen or a computer
printer-generated label:
- Entrant’s name and address
- Section of entry
- A brief title relevant to the image that assists in its
identification.
- Briefly, when and where the photograph was taken
- If available, the photographic specifications of camera,
lens, film, ISO, f-stop and shutter speed.
Please note that the specific documentation required for
Section 6, Threatened Animals and Plants, must be included on a
separate sheet of paper for each print in this section.
5. Up to four prints may be entered into each of the ten
sections. Put each print into a separate unsealed envelope with
the envelope again labelled with name, address, section entered
and brief title relevant to the image. Prints entered should be
mailed in one package with the cost of entry (see Rule 18) plus
completed entry form.
6. The entrant must be the sole photographer and owner of
copyright of all images entered.
7. The entrant must declare if an image has been taken with the
subject in captivity or in conditions that are unnatural. If
animals are photographed in captivity they should be animals,
either native or feral, seen in the wild in the ANZANG
bioregion. If unethical practice by any party is suspected the
photographer will be disqualified.
8. Pet or farm animals and commercially cultivated plants are
not classified as natural for the purposes of this competition.
Plants photographed must be native to the ANZANG bioregion.
9. In all sections except section 8) Interpretive Photography,
images taken with film cameras must not be adjusted beyond a
level that would be applied in conventional optical printing
techniques. This means for images taken with digital cameras
digital adjustments in all sections (except section eight,
Interpretive Photography) are only acceptable if limited to
levels, curves, colour, saturation and contrast work and minor
cleaning work. The integrity of the original subject with its
form and (if applicable) its behaviour must be maintained.
Compositing and multiple exposures are not allowed. Sharpening
is allowed. Cropping is allowed. Threre are no restrictions for
the Interpretive Photography section as this section is
designed for those photographers who wish to experiment
graphically with their images.
10. All entries must have been taken within seven years
of the date of close of entries. An image that has won an award
or commendation in another major competition is not eligible for
entry. (A major competition is one defined as receiving 500
entries or more.) Substantially similar images may not be
entered in more than one section.
11. A print may not be created from more than one original
photographic or digital exposure in any section except in
Interpretive Photography, Section 8.
12. Junior Section:
- A junior entrant must be under 18 years of age as at the
closing date of the competition (1st May, 2008).
- Clearly mark the back of each print and envelope ‘Junior
Section’.
- The entrant must choose subjects that would be suitable
for entry into any of the first nine sections, in the format
defined in Rule 2.
- Entries may be in colour or black and white.
- The entrant plus a parent or guardian must sign
the entry form. All other rules of the competition apply.
13. Judges appointed by the organiser will choose the
winners. The organiser’s decision on all competition matters
will be final and no correspondence regarding competition
judging or organisation will be entered into.
14. If a section receives no entries attaining the judges’
standard no prize will be awarded.
15. Winners, runners-up and highly commended entrants will
be notified in September, 2008.
16. The entrant grants ANZANG Nature Pty Ltd the right to
free reproduction and exhibition of all prize-winning and
highly commended images in all media for the duration of
copyright, but only in association with promotion and
publicity for this competition, exhibition and associated
conservation objectives of the organisation. This includes
the production of an exhibition publication in the form of a
book or catalogue. Due photographic credit will be given.
Any other image application will be undertaken only after
consultation with the photographer.
17. All prints and, if called for, other material are sent
at the photographer’s own risk, although all care will be
taken by the organiser. The entrant releases ANZANG Nature
Pty Ltd from liability for any damage to, or loss of,
printed or original photographs or digital images.
18. Cost of entry: Prints entered must be mailed in
one package and must include the total cost of entry, as
